1. Geographical location of Hon Khoai tourist island

Hon Khoai has an area of about 4km², located in the East - South of Ca Mau Cape, 14.6km from the mainland (nearest place), in Tan An commune, Ngoc Hien district. The peak of the island is 318m above sea level, Hon Khoai also has other names such as Hon Giang Tien, Hon Giang Huong or Hon Doc Lap. During the French colonial period, it was called Poulo Obi island, but the locals still call it Hon Khoai because its shape looks like a giant potato.

Hon Khoai is located in a tourist island cluster in Ca Mau province, which includes many small islands such as: Hon Lon, Hon Nho, Hon Tuong, Hon Sao and Hon Doi Moi.

In addition to its beautiful seaport, Hon Khoai Island also has other famous features that create a strange attraction for tourists, which is that this place still retains its primeval forest, belonging to the tropical island forest ecosystem. It has a very rich flora with more than 1,400 species and is rich in tropical forest trees and mangrove trees.

On the highest peak of Hon Khoai Island, there is a lighthouse built by the French in the early 1920s. The lighthouse is a square with each side 4 m long, 14.50 m high, built of rubble and cement, with a scanning capacity of 35 km. Hon Khoai Lighthouse is considered one of the earliest lighthouses from the French colonial period in Vietnam. Although it has existed for nearly 100 years, its architecture is still quite intact. This is one of the lighthouses in the Can Gio - Con Dao - Hon Khoai - Phu Quoc lighthouse system to illuminate ships traveling on the East Sea during the French colonial period.

On April 27, 1990, Hon Khoai was recognized by the Ministry of Culture and Information as a National Historical and Cultural Relic. In 2009, Ca Mau province issued a decision to plan the Hon Khoai eco-tourism area. With its cool climate, beautiful scenery, forests and sea, Hon Khoai is always an attractive resort for domestic and foreign tourists, especially during holidays and Tet. Standing from the top of the lighthouse, visitors can admire the land at the end of the country.

2. How to get to Hon Khoai tourist island

Because Hon Khoai Island is located 14.6km from the mainland, the only way to get there is by canoe or boat from Nam Can port or Rach Goc fishing port to Hon Khoai. However, visitors should note that each boat here can only carry 8-10 people. So if you go beyond that, you will have to rent another boat or if you want to save money, you can share a boat with other visitors.
Boat rental prices range from 2 to 5 million per trip, so usually traveling in a group will save more money. Visitors should note one more thing because the island does not have a tourist wharf, so you can only rent a private boat or ask to join fishing groups to travel to the island or buy a border boat ticket to Hon Khoai Island.

3. What is Hon Khoai tourism?

When tourists come to Hon Khoai, they will be able to visit and swim at two beaches: Big Beach and Small Beach. There are many streams on the island, including two large streams with fresh water flowing all year round, providing water for the island and fishing boats around the area.

Because Hon Khoai Island currently does not have many people living there, Hon Khoai tourism activities have not yet developed strongly, so it still retains its wild and rustic peace. The air is very fresh, enjoy relaxing moments to erase all worries, fatigue and pressure of daily life.
