Phu Quoc Prison considered the second “hell on earth” next to the famous Con Dao prison. According to Phu Quoc Express, the prison was built on an area of 400 hectares, with nearly 500 houses, divided into 12 zones (each zone has 2 sub-zones) and 10 areas (each zone has 4 sub-zones named in order A, B, C, D). Each camp can accommodate about 3,000 prisoners. Around each sub-zone are 4 guard posts that guard 24/24 hours and 10 mobile guard posts. The prison is surrounded by nearly 10 layers of barbed wire.
Phu Quoc prison relics existed during the French colonial period, specifically in 1946. At that time, the French colonialists occupied Phu Quoc and chose this place to become the largest prison in Southeast Asia, called Cang Cay Dua (also known as Cay Dua Prison).
The prison at that time was built in a rectangular shape with an area of 40 hectares, including 4 detention camps A, B, C, D. The camp was surrounded by a dense barbed wire fence, above which were electric wires and ceiling lights illuminating the entire camp to prevent prisoners from escaping. The doors were made of corrugated iron, the floor of the prison cells was covered with cement to prevent prisoners from digging tunnels to escape. The prison had guards 24/7, the guard towers were equipped with rifles and submachine guns. By 1954, this place held about 14,000 prisoners.
By 1955, it seemed that the nightmare had stopped after the Geneva Accords were signed. However, nightmares followed nightmares, a new prison was built on the foundation of the old Cang Cay Dua prison, holding both male and female prisoners, as well as the elderly.
According to historical records, Phu Quoc prison detained more than 40,000 soldiers and prisoners, all of whom were heroic revolutionaries, and about 4,000 people were killed by savage torture. This is a terrible and endless pain for our nation.
2. Brutal forms of torture at Phu Quoc prison

– Tiger cage model: Made from barbed wire in many different sizes and shapes, such as having prisoners lie on the ground, lie on the wire, sit hunched or stand hunched. When imprisoned in this cage, prisoners are only allowed to wear shorts to expose themselves to the sun, dew, and rain outside.
– Nailing model: Prisoners will be tortured by having nails 7 to 8 centimeters long driven into their bodies in many places such as shoulder joints, ankles, shins, heads, etc.
– Iron grating model: iron gratings with many round holes used to line airport runways, with many sharp edges underneath, forcing prisoners to take off all their clothes and then plunge their heads into the iron gratings and roll over many times. At that time, the prisoners will have their scalp peeled off, their hair will fall out, and their whole body will be peeled and bloody.
– Chisel and tooth breaking model: Prisoners will be tied up and kneeling on the floor, then the prison guard will use a hammer and chisel to break their teeth.
– Human compression model: Prisoners will be squeezed between two wooden boards with ropes and screws, then the prison guard will use a hammer to hit all over the body.
– Model of beating prisoners with stingray whips: Prisoners will be stripped naked, their hands tied to the wall, then the prison guard will use a whip made from a dried stingray tail to beat them, causing their skin to tear and bleed.
– Barrel-knocking model: Prisoners will be put into a barrel filled with water in a squatting position, then the prison guard will push their heads down into the water, while the other guard will use a hammer to knock hard on the barrel, causing many prisoners to break their ears and choke on water until they die.
In addition, in Phu Quoc prison, there are many extremely cruel torture models that make anyone who hears them terrified, such as: breaking ankles and kneecaps; gouging out eyes, using high-pressure lamps close to the eyes until the eyes pop; putting prisoners in a pot of boiling water; using pliers to pull out fingernails and toenails; dousing the mouth with gasoline and burning it when they do not confess, etc.
However, no matter how brutal the torture was, it could not shake the will and patriotism of the patriotic revolutionary prisoners, and there were many prison breaks, the most notable of which was the escape after 6 months of digging, creating a 120m long, 60cm wide tunnel, bringing 21 revolutionary soldiers out of prison on the morning of January 21, 1969.
